DHAKA: US Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs Nisha Desai Biswal expressed her concern over the recent workers unrest in country’s readymade garments sector.

Nisha expressed her discontent in a meeting with Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) leaders on Sunday afternoon.

The meeting held at 12:40pm in capital’s Westin hotel.

BGMEA leaders informed Nisha about minimum wage implementation and trade union. Besides, they mentioned various welfare activities for the workers.

The apex body of the garments sector also urged Nisha to encourage US consumers to buy Bangladeshi cloths in high rate.

After the meeting, Nisha told journalists that Bangladesh is the progressing country in garment sector and they want to work with it.

With BGMEA president Atiqul Islam in the chair, the meeting was also attended, among others, by vice president of the organization Shahidul Azim and vice president (finance) Riaz Bin Mahmud.

Atiqul Islam told journalists that many important issues, including Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) facilities, finance in garments hub in Maushia of Munshiganj, ongoing unrest in garments sector were discussed in the meeting.
