The government announced Tk 12,500 as the minimum wage for the readymade garment workers on Tuesday (November 7) amid the ongoing workers' protest.
State Minister for Labour and Employment Monnujan Sufian came up with the development at a meeting held at Segunbagicha office in Dhaka this afternoon.
She said the government has raised the basic wages by 56.25% and declared a minimum wage of Tk 12,500 for the RMG makers.
The minimum wage for the RMG workers has been fixed based on the recommendations from both owners and workers representatives, she said.
“I urge the owners to open their factories and the workers to join their works,” Monnujan said.
On October 21, workers demanded that their minimum wage be increased from the existing Tk 8,000 to Tk 20,390 while the owners have proposed to increase it to Tk 10,400.
Garments workers in the capital and its adjoining areas have been pressing home their demand for a minimum wage of Tk 23,000 for the last 11 days.
