The government has decided to provide loans to readymade garment (RMG) factory owners to help them pay their workers’ salaries, aiming to restore normalcy in one of the fastest-growing economic sectors in the country.
Labour Adviser Asif Mahmud made the announcement while addressing a press conference after a meeting with the RMG factory owners at his ministry office in Dhaka on Wednesday (September 11).
The labour adviser came up with the announcement when the RMG owners announced closures of their at least 22 factories in Ashulia on Wednesday, following sporadic unrest over several demands including due salaries.
A decision has been made to immediately pay the workers’ outstanding salaries, and the factories affected by the workers' movement will be provided loans by the Bangladesh Bank, he said.
