Govt to dismantle syndicates by enhancing supply-monitoring: Adviser

Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashir Uddin has said the government will dismantle the market syndicate activities by increasing product supply and enhancing monitoring measures.

For this reason, the import duties on essential items such as rice, edible oil, onions, and eggs were reduced, he said.

The adviser made these remarks this morning (Nov 20) while inaugurating the sale of potatoes and other products by the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) through mobile trucks at the TCB office in Karwan Bazar.

Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce Mohang Selim Uddin attended the event as a special guest.

"There are no trade obstacles between India and Bangladesh. Essential commodities like rice, pulses, onions, and eggs are being imported. Through trade liberalization, we aim to strengthen relations with all nations, including India," said Sheikh Bashir Uddin.

He also highlighted that the government has subsidized Tk 4,500 crore to ensure that essential products are available to the people at reduced rates. Efforts are ongoing to procure products at lower costs to expand their reach and make them more affordable for them.

The adviser stressed the importance of collaboration between businessmen and the administration to stabilize the prices of all commodities, including potatoes.

As part of this initiative, the TCB has started selling essential items such as lentils, edible oil, and potatoes at 50 locations across the capital. This program, which began on Wednesday, will continue until December 31 or until market prices, particularly for potatoes, stabilize following the arrival of new harvests.

During the inauguration, Sheikh Bashir Uddin announced subsidized prices: potatoes at Tk 40 per kg, edible oil at Tk 100 per liter, lentils at Tk 60 per kg, and rice at Tk 30 per kg.
