Ad against fugitives of Destiny scam

DHAKA: A Dhaka court on Monday asked to publish advertisements against the fugitive 46 accused people of Destiny on national dailies following the embezzlement of Tk 4119 crore and money laundering cases.

The court also directed authorities concerned to appear the fugitives before it by November 11.

Dhaka Senior Special Judge Court magistrate M Zahirul Haque passed the order.

On June 11, after acceptance of the charge-sheet, the Judge M Zahirul Haque also issued arrest warrant against the fugitives.

On May 4, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) submitted charge-sheet against 51, including Destiny chairman and managing director brining allegation of embezzling Tk 4,119 crore.

ACC deputy director Mozahar Ali Sarder and assistant director M Taufiq submitted the charge-sheet to Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in the two cases.

Some 150 people were made witness in the cases.

The accused include Destiny Group chairman Lt Gen (retd) M Harunur Rashid and its managing director Mohammad Rafiqul Amin.

It also includes Destiny 2000 chairman Mohammad Hossain and deputy managing director Gofranul Huq and directors Sayed-ur Rahman, Mejbah Uddin Swapan, Syed Sazzad Hossain, Irfan Ahmed, Farha Diba, Jamsed Ara Chowdhury, Sheikh Tayebur Rahman and Nepal Chandra Biswas, Zakir Hossain, former General Secretary of DMCSL, Azad Rahman, former Joint Secretary of DMCSL, Akbar Hossain Sumon, former Treasurer of DMCSL, Shirin Akhter, Lt Col (retd) Didarul Alam, a Director of Destiny 2000, and six former DMCSL members Rafiqul Islam Sarker, Majibur Rahman, Sumon Ali Khan, Saidul Islam Khan Rubel and Abul Kalam Azad.

The officials embezzled the money in the name of paying salaries, honoraria, commission, incentives and promotional costs. They transferred the money to their personal bank accounts.

They misappropriated Tk 2,433 crore from 17.5 lakh investors by selling 6.18 crore saplings under the tree plantation project. In reality, the group planted only 32 lakh trees, according to ACC findings.

The company lured people into investing money in the plantation project saying if anyone invested Tk 8,000 under the Golden Package, the person would get Tk 20,000 after six years, and an investment of Tk 5,000 under the Silver Package would fetch Tk 30,000 after 12 years.
