DHAKA: The Unnayan Parishad, led by Nitol Niloy Group chairman Abdul Matlub Ahmed, swept the biennial election of the Board of Directors of Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) for 2015-17 term.
In chamber group, Unnayan Parishad bagged 12 out of 16 director posts while Swadhinata Byabsayee Parishad, led by Monowara Hakim Ali, secured remaining four posts.
In association groups, Unnayan Parishad also secured 13 out of 16 director posts while another panel led by Shafqat Haider Chudhury bagged remaining three posts.
Lawmaker Professor Ali Ashraf, chairman of the FBCCI election conducting committee, announced the results of the chamber group and the association group around 11:30pm on Saturday and around 7:45am on Sunday respectively.
However, two candidates of Swadhinata Byabsayee Parishad, who ran for the post of 16th director in chamber group, got the same numbers of votes.
Professor Ali Ashraf told banglanews that their votes will be recounted. If both secure same numbers of ballots voting will be conducted again.
However, no more than 16 directors will be elected in any way, he added.
Polls to the Board of Directors of county’s apex trade body were held on Saturday. Voting started at 9:00am and continued till 5:00pm.
Sources concerned told banglanews that the turnout was 88.60 percent. Out of 436 voters from the chamber group, 418 cast their votes and 1,533 out of 1,766 voters from the association group franchised in the polls.
A total of 52 directors will form the board of the country’s apex trade body. Of which, 32 directors were elected in direct elections - 16 each from chamber groups and association bodies - while 20 other directors will be nominated from different chambers and associations of the country.
However, the elected and nominated directors will make the president, first vice-president and vice-president among themselves for this term on May 25 and the results will be announced on May 28.
