DHAKA: Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed categorically said that the largest readymade garments (RMG) town will be build up in Baushia in Munshiganj district.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is scheduled to be signed between country’s largest RMG owners organization Bangladesh Garment Manufactures and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and China’s Orient International in this regard.

The minister came up with this assertion at a press conference at his secretariat office in city on Tuesday.

He said the dream will come true with signing the MoU. The satellite city for export-oriented RMG products will be constructed within three years. About 3,000 laborers will work daily to build the city.

He further said in the RMC city will house 300-500 garments factories and provide modern opportunities. As a result, the foreign investors will be interested to import Bangladeshi garments products.

Mentioning that the country has been stepping forward to economical growth by the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the commerce minister said Bangladesh will be able to export garments products of 3 billion US dollars every year from the city.

After a six-month study, the Chinese enterprise has submitted an assessment report of 100 pages presenting the potential for the sector, the minister added.

According to the minister, Orient International president Tang Xiaojie informed the ministry that the garments city will be constructed following the design of the RMG village of China’s Shanghai city. Some 3 lakh people, mostly women, are expected to be employed in the city.

The minister also expected that Bangladesh will achieve the first position in RMG sector in the world soon.
