DHAKA: The construction work of Ruppur nuclear power plant, funded by Russia, will begin in December and Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to be present in the inauguration.

Russian ambassador Alexander A Nikolaev in Dhaka said Putin might come to Dhaka during the final pact in implementing the project.

Sources said that a specialist team went to Moscow on Tuesday for 15 days to finalize the process. Besides, a Russian specialist team visited Bangladesh twice and they are scheduled to come here again.

The construction work is expected to be complete after 5 years and the production will begin in 2022. The plant will produce power for 80 years.

At least 2,800 Megawatt power can be produced from the plant if it works properly.

However, Russia will provide 90 percent of total cost with an interest rate of 1 percent and Bangladesh government will bear the rest.

State Minister for Science and Technology Architect Yafes Osman told banglanews that the implementation of the mega project is a milestone for Bangladesh and they expect that Putin will be present during the inauguration of the project work.

Recently, Russian ambassador told to a private TV channel that Putin is expected to visit Dhaka this year.
