DHAKA: The World Bank (WB) will give Bangladesh a loan of $17.7-crore more with the view to build a 335-MW combined cycle power plant in Siddhirganj to increase power supply in the country in a minimum cost.

The headquarters of the world lender in Washington DC in USA gave an approval of the loan on Friday.

World Bank country office in Bangladesh communications officer Mehrin Ahmed Mahbub confirmed the matter to banglanews on Saturday.

She further said adoption of combined cycle technology will help increase more electricity with less gas; it not only will save gas but also the environment.

The plant will add six percent more electricity in national grid, she added.

World Bank south Asia chief economist Martin Rama said the additional money will boost the power production and save gas.

The government set up a 300 MW gas turbine power plant in the area in 2008 and now it has planned to establish another one due to pressure of uprising demand of power amid gas crisis.

Gas Transmission Company Limited (GTCL), Bangladesh Electricity Generation Company (EGCB) and Bangladesh Power Grid Company (PGCB) will implement the project jointly.
