Bangladesh targets non-resident tourists

DHAKA: Civil aviation and tourism minister Rashed Khan Menon said the incumbent government is working to attract non-resident Bangladeshi tourists to strengthen country’s tourism sector.

‘We have targeted non-resident Bangladeshis (NRBs), who visit Bangladesh, got married here but do not enjoy their holidays in the country.’

The minister made this assertion as chief guest when speaking at a seminar, organized by Bangladesh Parjatan Board and tourism magazine ‘Bhraman’ at Le Méridien hotel in city Tuesday afternoon (January 26).

‘We usually get minimum allocation from the government for tourism. Moreover, we are working for the development of this sector and have already sent letters to all Bangladesh embassies.’

According to him, about 560,000 visited Bangladesh past year and the government is trying to increase the number to 100,000 this year.

Dhaka University Tourism and Hospitalities department professor Dr Syed Rashedul Hassan presented keynote paper at the seminar, chaired by civil aviation and tourism secretary Khorshed Alam.

Bangladesh Bank former governor Dr. Mohammed Farashuddin, caretaker government former adviser Geeti Ara Safia Chowdhury and Daffodil University chairman Mohammad Sabur Khan also spoke at the event, anchored by ‘Bhraman’ editor Abu Sufian.
