EU keen to invest more in Bangladesh

DHAKA: European Union (EU), the largest market for Bangladeshi products, has decided to boost its investment in the country.

It will also encourage other British companies to invest in Bangladesh.

Commerce minister Tofail Ahmed and EU ambassador Pierre Mayaudon jointly informed the matter to media at secretariat in city on Thursday (March 10).

A EU delegation led by Mayaudon met the commerce minister at latter’s office this noon.

The minister said, ‘The EU has been helping Bangladesh raise investment facilities. The forum’s member countries are our biggest export market. We have exported more than USD 17 billions last year. If there were no rise of inflation, the export could be more than USD 21 billions’.

‘As a single country, the United States is the biggest export market of Bangladeshi products,’ he added.

The EU envoy said, ‘Bilateral relations and cooperation will increase once Bangladesh government, ministry, administration and others concerned pay more attention in this matter’.

‘We will encourage European countries to boost their investment in Bangladesh to play the pivotal role in the country’s economic development.’

‘Economic relation between Bangladesh and EU is very good and we want to boost it. We give privileges to the county in export sector and we are willing to boost it. The relation will contribute in economic development of the country’, Pierre Mayaudon added.

He also talked about progress of the Bangabandhu satellite project.

The ambassador further said, ‘We can work together so that no negative image of Bangladesh is shown to others. EU will stand aside Bangladesh in development of the country’s economic situation’.
