DHAKA: Habiba Akhtar Papiya and Anisuzzaman Sohel received ‘Aminul Islam Young Artist Award’ at a ceremony at Bengal Shilpalaya in Dhanmondi.
The winners received one lakh taka each as prize money and crests. The award, introduced by Aminul Islam’s family to encourage the younger artists, is given this year for the first time.
The award giving programme and an inauguration of the 12-day exhibition with the selected artworks by 10 contestants were held on the occasion of the 82nd birth anniversary of country’s one of the eminent artists, Aminul Islam.
Noted artist Murtaja Baseer handed over the awards to the winners as chief guest Thursday evening.
Artists Syed Jahangir, Rafiqun Nabi and Ruby Islam were present as special guests at the programme, presided over by Bengal Foundation chairman Abul Khair.
A total of 32 artworks by the contestants are on display at the gallery to remain open from 12:00pm to 8:00pm till November 18.
Born in 1931, Aminul Islam is honoured as one of the first generation artists and a leading member of the modern art movement in Bangladesh. He died in 2011.
