A Dhaka court today placed Motazzerul Islam Mithu on a five-day remand in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) over amassing huge illegal assets beyond known sources of income.

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Court Judge Sabbir Faiz passed the order after Mithu was produced before the court with a plea for 10 days remand, following the rejection of his bail petition.

Earlier on September 11, Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested Mithu — described by investigators as the mastermind behind large-scale corruption and irregularities in the health sector during the Awami League government — from the capital.

He was produced before the court the same day with a petition seeking 10 days remand, while his lawyer filed for bail. The court denied bail and sent him to jail, setting today for the hearing of both petitions.

According to the ACC, Mithu illegally acquired assets worth Tk75 crore beyond his known sources of income.
