DHAKA: Protesters shut down traffic at major junctions in Bangkok on Sunday in a bid to oust the caretaker government a day ahead of the registration for candidates in the February 2 snap polls.
Although the protest leaders had expected a turnout in the region of 2 million, the National Security Council estimated that about 100,000 had hit the streets by Sunday afternoon.
Sporting whistles and ribbons with colours of the Thai flag, they occupied the capital’s Asoke and Ratchaprasong intersections as well as Victory Monument roundabout, among other places.
A separate group massed around the house of caretaker premier Yingluck Shinawatra, though she was away in Udon Thani in north-eastern Thailand, reports The Straits Times.
