A car accidentally hit an SUV that was part of a motorcade escorting President Joe Biden in Wilmington, Delaware on Sunday night—resulting in damage to both vehicles—although the president and first lady Jill Biden were unharmed.
According to Reuters and CNN, the incident occurred just as Biden was about to enter his vehicle after meeting with members of his reelection team at the Biden-Harris 2024 campaign headquarters in Wilmington.
A Secret Service official told CNN that no threat was linked to the incident, suggesting that the crash was accidental and Biden’s motorcade was able to leave the area without incident.
The vehicle involved in the accident was a silver sedan which was quickly surrounded by Secret Service agents with their weapons drawn, prompting the driver to hold his hands up.
Photos of the sedan showed damage to its front end including the bumper and headlights.
The impacted SUV was not the president’s vehicle and Biden was quickly escorted to his vehicle by Secret Service after the incident.
It is unclear if the driver of the sedan was apprehended for questioning and if he or anyone else sustained any injuries from the crash. Photos and videos of the incident show falling rain and wet roads, which may have been the cause of the crash.
