More than 200 million people over Indonesia's 17,000 islands and across three time zones are eligible to vote.
The election will see voters choose their president, vice-president and representatives in the legislature.
The current frontrunner is former defence minister Prabowo Subianto, a retired general with a bloody human rights record.
It has prompted fears that Indonesia is in danger of sliding back towards its authoritarian past.
Ganjar Pranowo, whose party supported outgoing President Widodo's two previous campaigns, and Anies Baswedan are also in the running.
Unofficial quick count results are expected to come within hours, and if no one secures a simple majority, a run-off vote will be held in June.
