US election in Bangladesh newspapers

DHAKA: The US people are about to get their new leader through the 45th presidential election slated to be held on Tuesday (November 8). White House hopefuls Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump have drawn the attention of global audiences with their dreams and aspirations.

Bangladeshi audiences have also shown their interests in this regard. Country’s newspapers have published the election reports as their lead items highlighting the last minute poll campaigns. Banglanews presents the write-up based on reports of some leading dailies for its esteemed readers.

The Daily Star publishes an agency report with the title of ‘America Decides Today: Clinton, Trump in end-game fight. It also publishes an analysis ‘A new age of darkness if Trump wins?’ by Shakhawat Liton and a commentary ‘Trump’s Contribution to US Politics: If you can’t win the election, pervert it’ by its editor Mahfuz Anam.

Liton writes “Donald Trump has brought back memories of the Republican President Hoover (Herbert Hoover) who has been blamed for worsening the Great Depression of 1930s. He has been likened to Hoover by political experts and economists in the USA as the duo has certain dangerous similarities, particularly the ones for protectionist trade policy.”

In his commentary Anam says, “There was something eerily familiar about watching the present US election as a Bangladeshi. We have seen it all several times over--denigrating the opponent, making unsubstantiated claims, telling outright lies, quoting unsourced figures, citing partial quotes, and refusing to respond to emerging uncomfortable facts as the voting day nears.”

New Age also publishes an agency report shortening the title ‘Trump, Clinton in end-game fight’. It talks about overall situation of the White House rivals prior to the election.

According to the report, “Clinton’s popularity had dipped after FBI director James Comey dropped a campaign bombshell eight days earlier with a reopened inquiry into whether she exposed US secrets by using a private email server while serving as secretary of state.”

Citing opinion polls the report further said that it “had tightened as Trump began to recover ground lost while battling accusations of sexual assault, and the race looked headed for a photo finish”.

The Daily Observer’s ‘Clinton v Trump today’ lead story puts several questions, “The most powerful nation on earth is about to elect a new leader, with the impact felt across the globe. So how will the election work and how did we end up with Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton?”

“When the US picks its president, it is not only choosing a head of state but a head of government and a commander-in-chief of the largest military on the planet. It’s a big responsibility. So how does the process work?”

“Who can be president?”

“Technically, to run for president, you only need to be ‘a natural born’ US citizen, at least 35 years old, and have been a resident for 14 years.”

It also publishes two other agency reports ‘Election 2016: Twists and turns aplenty’ and ‘FBI clears Clinton in email review two days before election’.

The Independent’s ‘Road to White House’ news report publishes the same story.

Daily Sun publishes ‘US election poll tracker: Who is ahead - Clinton or Trump?’ It also publishes two side reports ‘US election 2016: Trump team tries to ease global concern’ and ‘Pro-Trump Fox News final poll shows Clinton ahead’.

The ‘global concern’ story says, “Donald Trump's campaign team has sought to allay negative views expressed overseas towards its candidate, a day before the US goes to the polls.”

It also says, “Campaign manager Kellyanne Conway told the BBC such antipathy ‘doesn’t reflect why Donald Trump is running and who he would be on the global stage’. She also attacked Hillary Clinton’s ‘unremarkable to chequered’ record as secretary of state.”

“Both candidates are undertaking a blitz of campaigning in key states on Monday.”

“The latest national poll, conducted by YouGov for The Economist, gave Mrs Clinton a four-point lead.”

The Bangla dailies also give the US election top priority in their news presentation.

Prothom Alo publishes a banner headline ‘Who will win: Hillary or Trump?’ In their separate write-ups from the USA Hasan Ferdous, Ali Riaz and Sheikh Sabiha Alam uphold people’s thoughts about the White House hopefuls Hillary and Trump. They also talked about expert opinions, survey data and other activities regarding the election.

Jugantor publishes Reuters survey mentioning that ‘Clinton has 90 percent chance of winning’. It also publishes another report ‘Itihas garar hatchhani’. The daily is also carrying six other reports regarding the election.

Samakal carries four reports on front page including ‘Hillary or Trump’. It also publishes FBI report on Hillary and an opinion expecting Hillary’s victory.

Kaler Kantho publishes four reports including ‘FBI bomb’ and ‘Reuters survey’. The presentation of the reports highlights Hillary and hopes her win.

All the reports and opinions published in the dailies give cautious leaning to Hillary as she will be the first female president in the US history if elected.
