3 killed in Kashmir militant attack

Gunfire and explosions rang out of a paramilitary complex close to Srinagar airport in India-controlled part of disputed Kashmir on Tuesday morning (Oct 3) after an attack by militants, officials said. Two of the gunmen and one BSF personnel were killed while two more troopers were injured.

Inspector general Muneer Khan earlier said one militant has been killed and three Border Security Force jawans were injured, adding that at least two more militants were seen to have been hiding inside a building, reports the Hindustan Times.

Around an hour later, police sources said another militant had been killed, while one of the wounded BSF jawans succumbed to his injuries. “The residential quarters of BSF is safe,” the police source added.

Militant group Jaish e Mohammed claimed the attack on the BSF facility, which comes a little over a month after an identical incident in the state capital’s police lines on August 26 when 8 security personnel were killed by the outfit.

Reports said a third militant has been killed in the operation.

Director general of police SP Vaid the bodies of two militants have been retrieved, and one jawan was also killed. “One terrorist is still holed up in the administrative block of the camp,” he said.

The DGP said six persons were evacuated from the BSF camp.

An Indian Air Force base and a CRPF camp are situated close to where the attack took place. Morning flights out of the airport were cancelled, and staff and passengers were initially stopped at Humhama chowk a few kilometres before the entrance.

The attack came days after unidentified gunmen killed a BSF jawan at his residence in Bandipora district.
