DHAKA: Iran plans to build a new domestically designed warship, named the Persian Gulf.
The commander of the Iranian navy said in an interview with the Fars News Agency published on Sunday, Tehran Times prints this report on Monday.
Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari also said that the process of building the warship would begin during the current Iranian calendar year, which started on March 21.
Elsewhere in his remarks, he said that the Sahand destroyer would become operational during the next Iranian calendar year.
The Sahand destroyer, which is equipped with advanced systems, was initially launched in November 2012.
Iran’s first domestically manufactured destroyer, the Jamaran, was launched in February 2010.
The Iranian navy has also announced it plans to build new destroyers which are capable of firing missiles.
