DHAKA: Superstition holds its good luck to cross a newborn’s palm with silver to wish the child riches and health, but Britain’s baby Prince George is getting something more, a whole new set of coins in his honour.
Britain’s Royal Mint said the 5 pound coin will carry the image of the child’s great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth II on the front and cherubs and lilies on the back.
The Royal Mint routinely issues commemorative coins for royal occasions, although it said on Monday that this would be its first set meant to mark a christening, the ceremony by which children are welcomed into the church through baptism.
Thousands of silver, gold and uncirculated versions of the coin are being minted, reports The Straits Times.
