Is your job making you sick?

DHAKA: Workplace stress can get to the best of us and we all feel incredibly exhausted and agitated from time to time. Stress is an unavoidable outcome of a high-pressure job and causes severe physical and mental complications if it remains unmanaged.

Symptoms must be looking for:

It is important to understand that if you are feeling incredibly pressured at the workplace, it may manifest in various health conditions. If your body remains in the flight and fight mode for a long period of time--owing to constant deadlines and a yelling boss--it may cause varied symptoms, reports TOI.

If you have been feeling overwhelmed and down and out lately, it is time to pay attention to work-related stress. Here are 3 symptoms you must be looking out for:

Falling sick pretty often

While everyone feels under the weather occasionally, if you have been experiencing frequent burnout and breakdowns, it could mean that there is something really wrong with your body. Signs of a weakened immune system include tensed muscles, flu-like symptoms, frequent body ache and insomnia. If the seasonal flu is hitting you before it affects anyone else, it might be the time to dial down the stress.

Quality of work gone down

If you find yourself making silly mistakes and notice a decline in your performance, your job could be hazardous to your health. Additionally, if you feel incredibly distracted and are making more errors than usual, it is a sign that your job is affecting your cognitive abilities.

Feeling depressed or anxious

Some of the side-effects of a toxic work culture include low motivation, decreased desire to excel at work, chronic irritation, low self-confidence etc. If you feel that being reprimanded or receiving disparaging messages is staying with you long after the working hours, it is a sign that something is terribly wrong.

What should you do?

While work can become incredibly stressful on certain days, if you are getting anxious with just the thought of going to work, maybe it is time to ponder. A bad boss, unsupportive co-workers or a hostile work environment--anything can be responsible for making you miserable at work. It is important to seek support when it all gets a little too much. Here are certain things you should do before calling it quits.

Talk to head of department

It does not matter what is bugging you. Talk to your supervisor about the challenges that you are facing, you may reach a conclusion.

Take care of mental health first

While it is a good thing to be able to manage everything on your own, burdening yourself with work is not a great idea. So instead of raising your hand every time a new project comes, handle the work which is already is there on your platter.

Sleep on time

Do not underestimate the healing properties of sleep. Your body and mind recover and heal from a taxing day during sleep. This is why getting at least 6-8 hours of proper sleep every day is extremely important.
