Kenyan actress and filmmaker Lupita Nyong’O made quite the statement at the New York Film Festival screening of ‘12 Years a Slave’ by teaming her blue dress with a bold red lip, but rather than a minimalist eye, her makeup artist Nick Barose opted for a steely grey shadow with thin, winged-out liner.

‘The combo of red lips and liquid liner is the epitome of classic glamour,’ he said, according to InStyle.

‘To keep it modern and updated, we didn’t wing the liner out too much.’

To create a similar look on yourself, apply an asphalt-toned shadow all over your lids, then blend out the edges using a dome-shaped eye brush.

By looking down into a hand mirror while sweeping on your liner, you’ll be able to get as close as you can to your lash line without having to close your eyes.

‘The tails should flick out no more than 3/4 of a millimetre,’ Barose added. ‘It should look more 2013 than 1950s.’
