PM invited to Commonwealth summit

DHAKA: Secretary General of the Commonwealth Kamalesh Sharma invited Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to join in the working group of the Post-2015 Development Agenda to advance global inter-governmental negotiations in London.

Following the Commonwealth summit in Colombo in November, 2013, a decision was taken regarding the role to be played by the Commonwealth to advance global inter-governmental negotiations on the Post-2015 Development Agenda.

To actively contribute to the Post-2915 Development Agenda, a representative working group of eight Commonwealth leaders is to be formed.

The working group will oversee the development of the Commonwealth Statement on the Post-2015 Development Agenda which will succeed the UN’s Millennium Development Goals.

Secretary General of the Commonwealth invited Sheikh Hasina to participate in the working group to oversee the Statement.

Other head of states who have been invited to join the group are Australia’s Anthony Abbott, Cyprus’s Nicos Anastasiades, Grenada’s Dr Keith Mitchell, Sierra Leone’s Ernest Bai Koroma, Tonga’s Lord Siale’ataongo Tu’ivakano, Tanzania’s Jakaya Kilwete and Sri Lanka’s Mahinda Rajapaksa who will chair the group.

In continuing the Commonwealth’s practice of making practical and positive contribution to global processes, Commonwealth leaders decided to engage collectively to help shape the Post-2015 Development Agenda to identify Commonwealths’ perspectives and recommendations to be put forward to 69th session of the UN General Assembly.
