‘Fight for mother tongue rare’

DHAKA: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said there was no country in the world which had to fight for their mother language like Bangladesh.  

“Bengali is our mother tongue and we had to sacrifice lives for it. We had to fight for it. Bangladeshis got the mother language by fighting,” she said.  

The premier made the comment while speaking at a function at International Mother Language Institute on the occasion of International Mother Language Day on Friday afternoon.    

She paid her respect to the Rafiqul Islam and Salam as they made the motion for international recognize for Bangla to observe it as International Mother Language Day.  

Sheikh Hasina also paid tribute to the language movement martyrs for their great sacrifices.  

Ministers, professionals, educationalists and civil society members were present in the programme.
