RANGAMATI: Gunmen gunned down an activist of Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity at Karbaripara in Rajsthali upazila on Wednesday morning, a day after the killing of a reformist breakaway, as the hills look restive again.

The deceased was identified as Swapan Tonchaingya, 35, an activist of the mainline PCJSS led by its supremo Santu Larma.

The gun attack in the backwoods also left Swapan’s associate Rahul Tonchaingya, 33, wounded.

Quoting family members, police said Swapan and Rahul came under attack while going to a local shop for recharging balance in their cell-phone sets at about 7am.

“Swapan died on the spot bullets pierced his chest. Rahul sustained critical injuries,” second officer of Rajsthali police station Mohsin Sarkar told banglanews24.com.bd.

Rahul was rushed to Rajsthali Upazila Health Complex instantly. Later, he was sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.

“Condition of Rahul was stated critical,” a hospital source said.

Information and publicity secretary of the central committee of PCJSS Sajib Chakma claimed Swapan and Rahul as members of their organisation. He suspected it as a revenge action and blamed rival UPDF responsible for the killing.

The anti-peace pact UPDF, however, denied the allegation.
