DHAKA: Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader said the attack on renowned writer and educationist Professor Dr. Md. Zafar Iqbal is a plot patronized by the BNP.
Quader, also Road Transport and Bridges Minister, made the remarks before distributing leaflets on the occasion of March 7 rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in city’s Gulistan area Sunday morning (March 4).
The ruling Awami League is set to organize the rally at Suhrawardy Udyan marking the historic March 7th speech of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
In response to a query, Quader said the attack on Zafar Iqbal is plot and BNP os patronizing the plotters. The attacker, Foyzur Rahman, has already been held and perpetrators behind will be caught soon.
Zafar Iqbal, head of the Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) department and also a professor of Computer Science and Engineering department at the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) came under knife attack on the university campus on Saturday afternoon (March 3).
He was taken to a Sylhet hospital first and then airlifted to Dhaka Combined Military Hospital (CMH) for better treatment last night.
Quader said, “Zafar Iqbal always try to embrace the spirit of liberation war and he is a firm soldier of Liberation. Attack on him hints evil force is activating to create volatility in country.”
“The attacker said Iqbal is anti-Islam and that is why he carried out the attack. But I can’t recall any roles of Iqbal in anti-islamic activities and I don’t think no one in the country can”, Quader added.
