Ex MP Kamal now files appeal against Zia Orphanage verdict

DHAKA: One of the convicts in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case former BNP lawmaker from Magura Kazi Salimul Haque Kamal alias Econo Kamal filed an appeal with the High Court Tuesday (March 6).

Kamal is the second convict to file appeal after BNP Chief Khaleda Zia in the same case.

Khaleda Zia, now in jail, filed her plea with the HC on February 20.

Kamal and four others—the then BNP Senior Vice Chairman Tarique Rahman, BNP Founder Ziaur Rahman's nephew Mominur Rahman, former principal secretary to Prime Minister Kamal Uddin Siddique and businessman Sharfuddin Ahmed were sentenced to 10 year imprisonment each while Khaleda Zia was jailed for five years.

On February 8, a special court in Dhaka handed down the verdict.

In July 2008, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case against the six persons for misappropriating over Tk 2.10 crore grant money for orphans.
