DHAKA: BNP has announced to stage demonstration in Dhaka and every district towns across the country demanding unconditional release of its chairperson Khaleda Zia who is currently in jail.
Moreover, the party will also hold a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka on March 29.
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir made the announcements at a press briefing in city’s Naya Paltan party office on Monday (March 19).
About the Supreme Court order that stayed High Court bail order for Khaleda, Fakhrul said the appellate division stayed Khaleda’s bail to reflect government’s wish.
Alleging that the ruling Awami League is hatching conspiracy to hold a one-sided election by keeping Khaleda Zia in prison, Fakhrul said the government is using the judiciary to take away the rights of the people.
The BNP leader has urged countrymen to stand together in the struggle of releasing party chief Khaleda Zia.
Senior BNP leaders were also present at the press conference.
Earlier on February 8, a special court in Dhaka sentenced five years imprisonment to BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case. She was sent to Dhaka central jail following the verdict.
On March 12, an HC bench of Justices Enayetur Rahim and Shahidul Karim granted bail for four months to Khaleda Zia after her lawyers filed the bail petition.
However, the Supreme Court stayed the HC bail order after the government and the ACC filed petitions with the Supreme Court seeking stay on the High Court order that granted four months interim bail to Khaleda Zia.
