DHAKA: BNP standing committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed said the election of Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), where pro-BNP lawyers bagged majority posts, is a reflection to happen in the next parliamentary election.
The senior BNP leader made the remarks while addressing as chief guest at protest rally organized by Zia Nagarik Forum in Press Club VIP lounge on Friday (March 23).
The rally was organized in demand of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s unconditional release from jail and holding a fair election under non-partisan neutral government.
Moudud said the popularity of the incumbent government sunk to ground zero. That is why in the SCBA polls, the ruling Awami League lawyers got only 25 percent vote while BNP got 75 percent vote.
“If the next general election is held this fairly, then the result will also reflect then. SCBA is the highest organization of lawyers. Everyone in here is conscious and thoughtful person. Their opinion is a representation of people’s opinion.”
Moudud also criticized the government for celebrating Bangladesh’s eligibility to graduate from a least developed country to a developed one.
He said, “According to government, Bangladesh is eligible to be a developing country but people have not received any benefit of that development. That is why people don’t want to be associated with this achievement.”
On Thursday evening (March 22), the government arranged a colorful program at Bangabandhu Stadium in Dhaka to celebrate country’s improvement from Least Developed Country (LDC) status where people of all walks of life participated.
Moudud Ahmed also criticized the government for not letting BNP to hold a rally in Dhaka. BNP has sought permission many times for the rally but the DMP did not give permission citing security reasons.
“There wont be any January-5-like election in this country. BNP will participate with its chairperson Khaleda Zia. There won’t be any election keeping Khaleda Zia in jail”, he added.
