DHAKA: Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Tuesday (March 27) filed an appeal with the High Court seeking extension of punishment for BNP chief Khaleda Zia in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.
An HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Shahidul Karim fixed Wednesday (March 28), for hearing upon the plea.
Lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan moved for ACC, at the courtroom Tuesday.
“In the case, the prime accused was awarded five years’ jail term whereas the associates were given jail terms for ten years each. Therefore, ACC thinks the prime accused wasn’t given enough penalty,” said Khurshid.
“Therefore, ACC has filed the appeal after being dissatisfied on the lower court verdict,” he added.
However, the Special Court-5 of Dhaka sentenced BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia for five years in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case on February 8.
Khaleda, the prime accused, landed in prison on the same day.
Her elder son also BNP Vice Chairman Tarique Rahman and four others were given 10 years imprisonment in the same case. The court also fined Tk. 2.10 crore each.
