Gayle, Samuels make history of records

DHAKA: With the batting storm of Gayle and Samuels, the cricket world Tuesday experienced the history of breaking a number of records in the 15th match of ICC World Cup against Zimbabwe in Canberra.

Chris Gayle hit the highest ever score at a World Cup and the equal-most sixes in an ODI innings on his way to an epic double-century against Zimbabwe.

Here is a summary of the amazing feats achieved by the West Indies superstar at Manuka Oval.

HIGHEST SCORE AT A WORLD CUP

Gayle’s score of 215 off 147 balls easily surpassed the record for the highest score at a Cricket World Cup, held by South Africa’s Gary Kirsten.

Kirsten set the mark almost two decades ago, having made 188 not out against the UAE back in 1996.

Gayle also passed the highest score by a West Indian at a World Cup, which was Viv Richards’ 181 against Sri Lanka in 1987.

MOST SIXES IN AN ODI INNINGS

Gayle equalled the record for most sixes in an ODI innings held by Rohit Sharma (2013) and AB de Villiers (2015) with 16.

Gayle’s previous best was nine sixes in an innings, which he clubbed during an innings of 125 against New Zealand in Jamaica three years ago.

HIGHEST PARTNERSHIP IN AN ODI

Gayle and Samuels broke the 16-year-old world record for the highest partnership in the history of ODI cricket for any wicket.

The previous record was held by Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid who put on 331 for the second wicket against New Zealand in Hyderabad in 1999.

The previous highest partnership at a World Cup was 318 between Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid against Sri Lanka in Taunton in 1999.

THIRD-HIGHEST SCORE IN AN ODI

Gayle became the first man in World Cup history to register a double century and the fourth in one-day internationals.

He is the first player to achieve the feat outside of India.

His final score of 215 is now the third-biggest in history, behind Rohit Sharma (264) and Virender Sehwag (219).

Sharma also hit 209 in a separate innings, and Sachin Tendulkar once made 200 not out.

FASTEST DOUBLE CENTURY IN AN ODI

There have only five double-tons in one-day internationals (by a man) but Gayle got their quicker than any of the others.

It took him just 138 balls to reach 200.

HIGHEST ODI INNINGS TOTAL IN AUSTRALIA

The Windies total of 2-372 was the highest ODI score ever recorded on Australian soil.

The previoius best was 5-368 scored by Australia against Sri Lanka in Sydney nine years ago.

The innings was also the fifth highest score in World Cup history. The highest total of 9-443 was posted by India against Bermuda in 2007.

Please note: all records are for men, and therefore do not include Belinda Clark’s 229
