Aussie-Lankan clash for Pool A 2nd spot begins

DHAKA: Mighty Australia are facing favorite Sri Lanka’s blowers in the teams’ ICC Cricket World Cup Pool A match Sydney Cricket Ground Sunday morning.

The match kicked off at 9:30am Bangladesh time.

Both sides are looking for victory to secure the Pool A point table’s second position rights before heading into quarterfinals of the tournament.

Aaron Finch began Australia’s innings with David Warner on the other end of the crease. Sri Lanka’s Lasith Malinga bowled the first over of the innings

Earlier Aussies captain Michael Clarke won the toss and decided to bat.

Australia pulled out Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Marsh making way for Xavier Doherty and Shane Watson.

Sri Lanka are playing with a settled team composition, especially with now after being given the task of replacing the injured Karunaratne and Herath.

With three wins in four matches, Sri Lanka have six points and are in second spot while Australia have five points from four games and sit at the third spot.

Australia’s match with Bangladesh was washed away in Brisbane, which makes harder to top the table unless New Zealand, who in at the top, lose any match.

The Kiwis have not embraced any defeat in the tournament yet.

On the importance of Sunday's encounter Aussies captain Michael Clarke said: "The players know where we stand, we don't need to talk about it. We have to be focused on tomorrow."

Lankans captain Angelo Mathews said: "I don't think the toss will be that crucial because the wickets are very good, and we've seen teams getting 300 or 300 plus. Those targets have been chased."
