Pakistan reach quarterfinals

DHAKA: With the stunning unbeaten ton of Sarfraz Ahmed, Pakistan entered the World Cup quarterfinals beating Ireland by seven wickets in Pool B match Sunday.

Ireland scored 237 runs losing all wickets in stipulated over and in response Pakistan scored 241 runs losing only three wickets.

Sarfraz Ahmed scored 101 runs, Shehzad 63 and Misbah hit 39 runs to lead the team to victory.

Earlier, William Porterfield’s century propelled Ireland to set a moderate target of 238 runs against Pakistan in the teams’ must win match of Pool B to qualify for the quarter-finals of the ICC World Cup at Adelaide. Ireland scored 237 runs all out in 50 overs.

Pakistan’s Wahab Riaz was the most successful bowler taking three wickets while Rahat Ali and Sohail Khan bagged two wickets each.

“Very happy,” said Sarfraz Ahmed, the Man of the Match. “Even before the match, Waqar said we haven't scored a hundred so we must try and get the hundred. Very important win. It was do or die for us. The bowlers and the fielders did really well. You could see they were giving it their all in the do-or-die match.”
