DHAKA: Apple has apologised for a ‘great inconvenience’ caused by a faulty mobile operating system update that prevented many new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus owners from connecting to their mobile networks.

Earlier on Thursday, the tech giant released an iOS 8 update, or iOS 8.0.1, that was supposed to fix problems including unexpected cellular data usage when receiving text messages and issues with its HealthKit, reports The Straits Times.

But the new update ended up disabling the new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus’ cellular service and Touch ID fingerprint sensor. Users also could not add new fingerprint to their iPhones.

‘We apologise for the great inconvenience experienced by users,’ Apple said in a statement. The company also said it is ‘working around the clock to prepare iOS 8.0.2 with a fix for the issue’.

A new update will be released in the next few days.

The incident comes hot on the heels of ‘Bendgate’ reports, where some iPhone 6 Plus users reported slight bending of their new smartphones.

Tech forums and Twitter were inundated with angry users complaining about their ‘bricked’ iPhone 6 and 6 Plus after the update.

The bugs seemed to have only affected iPhone 6 and 6 Plus users who updated to iOS 8.0.1 over the air, or wirelessly on their smartphones.

It did not seem to affect those who updated the mobile operating system via iTunes on a computer.

Nonetheless, Apple pulled the update within less than two hours of releasing it.

Apple said those affected by the update can reinstall iOS 8 through iTunes.
