Bangladesh sets Google-record

DHAKA: Bangladesh set a new record by contributing more than seven lakhs Bangla words in one day in Google Translate, a free online translation service.

Target was to add 4-lakhs words in Google. But Bangladesh has crossed the target and set a new world record by adding seven lakhs Bangla words in Google Translate, said concerned sources.

Disclosing the matter on Friday, State Minister for ICT Division Zunaid Ahmed Palak, MP, on his facebook page, congratulated 30-crore Bengali speaking people across the world for the achievement.

Regarding setting the record, the state minister told banglanews that through this achievement, archive of Bengali words in Google translate had been enriched. This record is one of evidences of the feelings of young generation to Bengali language and the country.

The words were included with the joint initiatives of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) division and Google Developer’s Group-Bangla (GDG-Bangla).

“We are happy to set the new record. The Bengalees, together from around the world, have added seven lakhs Bengali words and clauses in Google translate on March 26. Thanks to everyone who has responded to our call. It is an achievement at all, the pride of Bangla.”

Citing the project named ‘4 lakh for Bangla’ got the overwhelming response, the State minister of ICT ministry, said, “Four thousand volunteers worked for Bangla at 81 programs and more than 150 functions in home and abroad. More people had worked at home take our beloved language to the zenith. Thanks and gratitude to all. Long live the youth. "

Major work stations were in the Bangladesh Computer Council (BCC) premises in Agargaon of the city. Other than that, IT society of Dhaka University (DU) arranged work stations in the TSC and Shahid Meenar premises.

Bengali was previously in the second position of the Translate site’s archive, Spanish being the first. Organizers and everyone took part in the project in holding in the first position.

Alongside students of different universities of the country, Bangla speaking people across the world joined the initiates.

Google will arrange a visit to its Singapore office for highest word-adding person. People, who added more than one thousand words, will be awarded with electronic certificates.
