KALIAKOIR HI-TECH PARK (GAZIPUR): Under a joint venture with Sri Lanka, Bangladesh is going to start manufacturing smartphone and tabs at the High Tech Park in Gazipur district.

The first stage of manufacturing process has been initiated through the inauguration of groundbreaking of Summit Technopolis Ltd located at blocks no. 2 and 5 of the park on Sunday (February 28).

At the inaugural ceremony, state minister for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Zunaid Ahmed Palak said that the country needs a good number of laptops and smartphones every year.

‘A large amount of money goes out of the country in purchasing the ICT products from abroad.’

‘With the initiatives from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh will manufacture smartphones and laptops on the one-acre land at block 5 of the Hi-Tech Park.’

‘Moreover, it will create job opportunity for our workforce. Sri Lanka will help us in the process,’ he added.

Zunaid Ahmed Palak also asserted, ‘This is a joyous day for us, because we are making our own smartphones and laptops’.

He said that Bangladesh has to import 3 lakh laptops and 5 crore mobile phones every year. Even in this year, government has distributed 34 thousand laptops in the educational institutes.

‘We will not have to import these sorts of devices anymore. We can meet the domestic demand from this Hi-Tech Park’, the state minister hoped.

ICT secretary Shyam Sundar Sikdar and Summit Group chairman Mohammad Aziz Khan, among others, were present at inauguration program.
