The importers are in trouble for not being able to sell onions due to the shortage of buyers at Dinajpur's Hili land port.
According to information, due to excessive heat onions imported have rotted. In this situation, traders are selling these onions at the rate of Tk10 per kg.
However, good quality Indore variant onion is being sold at Tk50 while Nasik variety Tk55 per kg.
Besides, quality onions are being sold at Tk45 and low-quality onions at Tk10-20 per kg in the warehouses of various importers in the port.
Rupam Islam, who came to buy onions from Rangpur, said: “I came to Hili from Badarganj to buy onions. I am buying those spoiled onions rotting in the warehouse at the rate of Tk10-20 per kg. But the price of quality item is Tk45 per kg. These onions have been spoiled as those were stored to get higher prices.”
Hili Land Port Public Relations Officer Sohrab Hossain said onion is being imported under new tariffs. Since onion is a perishable product, the port authorities are helping traders sell the imported onions in the local market.
On Thursday, 645 tons of onion were imported in 22 trucks, and 1,121 tons were imported in 38 trucks on Saturday.
