Musk proposes US-Europe 'free trade zone'

Elon Musk has voiced support for creating a tariff-free trade zone between the United States and Europe, calling for the elimination of trade barriers to boost economic cooperation.

The tech entrepreneur and adviser to US President Donald Trump made the remarks during a video appearance at a conference organized by Italy’s right-wing League party in Florence on Saturday.

Musk’s comments come amid heightened trade tensions, following President Trump’s recent announcement of sweeping tariffs on imports, including a 20% duty on goods from European Union countries such as Italy.

“In the best-case scenario, both Europe and the United States should aim for zero tariffs, effectively establishing a free trade zone between the two regions,” Musk said.

Speaking directly with League leader Matteo Salvini, Musk also advocated for greater freedom of labor movement, suggesting that individuals should be able to work freely between Europe and North America.

He noted that he had already communicated this perspective to President Trump.

Musk has previously expressed alignment with right-leaning European political figures, including Salvini, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Germany’s AfD.

On the same day, Italy’s Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti urged caution in responding to the US tariffs, warning against retaliatory moves.

Meanwhile, EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic stated that the bloc would respond in a measured and coordinated manner.

Trump defended the tariffs as a transformative policy aimed at reviving American industry and job creation.

However, the announcement triggered significant declines in global financial markets, with US stocks posting their sharpest two-day drop since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Several countries have threatened countermeasures, escalating fears of a potential global trade conflict.
