In a dramatic escalation of trade policy, U.S. President Donald Trump has announced sweeping 30 percent tariffs on all goods imported from Mexico and the European Union, effective August 1.

The move follows failed negotiations with both blocs to secure broader trade agreements.

Posting official statements to his Truth Social platform on Saturday, Trump cited concerns over Mexico’s alleged contribution to illegal immigration and drug trafficking, and a persistent trade imbalance with the EU as key reasons for the decision.

“We have to protect American interests,” he wrote, framing the tariffs as a necessary response to what he described as longstanding challenges.

This latest round of duties significantly increases pressure on international trading partners.

Earlier this week, Trump unveiled additional tariffs targeting over 20 countries—including Japan, South Korea, Brazil, and Canada—and introduced a 50 percent levy on copper imports.

The new penalties exceed the 25 percent tariffs on Mexican goods introduced earlier in the year. However, exemptions remain for products covered under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

The European Union, meanwhile, finds itself facing a steeper tariff than the 20 percent announced by the Trump administration in April.

Reacting swiftly, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the EU is prepared to protect its economic interests.

“We will consider proportionate countermeasures if required,” she said in a formal statement, adding that the bloc remains open to negotiations ahead of the August deadline.

With international markets watching closely, the U.S.'s aggressive tariff strategy could impact diplomatic relations and global supply chains.

Whether this bold tactic yields trade reform or sparks retaliation remains to be seen.
