CHITTAGONG: Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has taken special preventive measures so that any untoward situation cannot be created in the garment sector ahead of Eid.
The apex body of the business community in the country’s export sector identified 25 “problem-prone” garment factories in Chittagong and went on monitoring to keep the situation under control, sources said.
This monitoring cell of BGMEA is conducting intensive surveillance to see whether the wages and overtime bills are being paid off properly in the factories.
Mohammad Nasir Uddin Chowdhury, first Vice-President of BGMEA, said overall there is no noticeable problem in garment sector in Chittagong.
"In spite of that, we have taken initiative to prevent unrest among the workers by identifying the factories," he said.
BGMEA sources said the vulnerable and problem-prone factories were spotted out on the basis of their track records, as there are apprehensions, and instances too, of outbreaks over arrears and eid bonus in factories in different industrial belts in the country.
