Income tax to be paid within Sep 30: Finance Minister

DHAKA: Finance Minister AMA Muhith Wednesday said from now on income tax would have to be paid within September 30 every year to ease the tax-payment process, as the government devised ways of enhancing revenues.

“Government’s expenditure is increasing with the extension of time. The government has taken measures to enhance its campaign and to facilitate payment of income tax online for ensuring receipt of more tax,” Muhith said.

He also informed that an income-tax fair for September 26-30 has been organized to encourage people about paying income tax.

The minister came up with the plans for netting higher amounts of tax revenues while inaugurating a colorful march marking National Income Tax Day, organized by the National Board of Revenue (NBR) Wednesday.

The procession started from in front of NBR headquarters and terminated at the National Press Club, campaigning for the citizens to pay tax on their incomes.
In 2008, when there had been a crackdown on tax-dodgers under a military-led anti-graft drive following the 1/11 changeover, the day was first observed in the country to encourage and motivate people into paying tax. This is the third time the country is observing the day.
Different divisional towns, including the capital, were decorated with slogan-inscribed graffiti marking the day. Besides, the NBR set up billboards on different road-islands of the capital.
The government’s revenue authority will award 350 leading taxpayers of the country as per a city corporation-and district-level survey in 2009-10 tax year.
