Robi launches 3.5G in Dhk, Ctg

DHAKA: Private mobile phone operator Robi Axiata Limited launched third generation of mobile communication technology 3.5G in Dhaka and Chittagong Saturday.

3.5G will allow Robi’s customers to surf the Internet with speeds of more than three times faster than 2G technology.

Robi 3.5G is the enhanced version of 3G that offers higher mobile Internet speed of up to 21Mbps, while 3G offers mobile Internet speed of up to only 384Kbps. Nevertheless, the average download data speed available is usually in the region of 1-3 Mbps.

With a 3G phone/device and access to the Robi’s 3.5G Technology, one can make video calls, watch live TV, access high speed Internet and enjoy live streaming at never before speeds.

Among the mobile operators, who got 3G licences recently, Robi launched first the service.

Tele-Communications Minister Sahara Khatun inaugurated Robi 3.5G service at Robi Corporate Office in the capital.

Robi subscribers will enjoy 3.5G technology in their old SIM cards from October. However, Robi subscribers can experience at Walk-in Centers in Gulshan of Dhaka and Muradpur of Chittagong.

Robi Axiata Ltd bagged 5MHz of 3G spectrum from an auction arranged by BTRC. The 3G service will help operators provide their users different services including high speed wireless internet, TV output and video conference.

Robi CEO, also Managing Director Micheal Kuehner said that with the help of internationally famous organization Axiata for their service of 3G and LTE (Long Term Evaluation), Robi will provide the 3G service in the country.

Kuehner also said, “Robi will start providing the service in small arena…gradually, 30 percent of users will be provided 3G service within the year.”

Robi official also said, “This is a new technology for all of us. We will pay heed to quality service along with speed.”

We will extend the service in Chittagong, Comilla, Sylhet by the year. Robi will invest $200 millions in the 3G sector, he further said.

Chief Technology Officer of Robi AKM Morshed said that the subscribers of 3.5G will get more speed than existing 3G services.

The programme was attended, among others, by acting chairman of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regularity Commission (BTRC) Gias Uddin Ahmed, Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Robi Mahtab Uddin Ahmed, Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) Pradip Shreebastab, Chief technology Officer AKM Morshed, Executive Vice president Mahmudur Rahman and vice president Talat Kamal.
