The probe committee found eight students involved in the killing of a mentally unstable man named Tofazzal Hossain (35), suspected of being a thief, at Fazlul Haque Muslim Hall of Dhaka University (DU).

The university administration has decided to temporarily expel these eight students and cancel their hall seats.

Meanwhile, although Jahangirnagar University (JU) student Zubair Ahmed from the 44th batch of the History Department was not involved in the murder of Chhatra League leader Shamim Molla, he was expelled, and a case was filed against him at Ashulia Police Station. Zubair, the affected student, said, "I have been wrongfully implicated."

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Dr. Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan said, "I have learned that this happened due to incorrect information. The person who has been temporarily expelled and made a defendant in the case is also named Zubair Ahmed, and the order was mistakenly issued using the information of the History Department's Zubair Ahmed. A correction will be issued by the Proctorial Committee and the Security Branch, and the correct name of the accused will be added to the case."

The expulsion of the eight DU students was confirmed last night by Associate Professor Saifuddin Ahmed, Assistant Proctor of the university.

Among the expelled students, three were former leaders of the Chhatra League. They include former Deputy Secretary for Science and Technology of the Chhatra League and Physics Department student Jalal Ahmed; 2018-19 session Chhatra League Secretary for Communication and Development Ahsan Ullah; and Al Hossain Sajjad, Office Secretary of the Chhatra League in the Earth and Environmental Sciences Faculty for the 2020-21 academic year. Others are Mohammad Sumon of the Department of Soil, Water and Environment (2021-22), Muttakin Sakin of the Institute of Nutrition and Food Science, Md Firoz Kabir of the Department of Botany (2020-21), Md Abdus Samad of the Department of Physics (2020-21), and Wazibul Sumon of the same department.

Among them, Jalal Miah, Mohammad Sumon, Ahsan Ullah, Muttakin Sakin, Al Hossain Sajjad, and Wazibul Alam have already been arrested as of Thursday.
