KUET revokes expulsion of 37 students, reopens halls

Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) has withdrawn the temporary expulsion of 37 students and reopened all seven of its residential halls, following a syndicate meeting held earlier today (April 23).

Registrar Md Anisur Rahman Bhuiyan confirmed that the expulsion orders, initially imposed during the April 14 syndicate session, were lifted after a fresh assessment of the situation.

Following the latest decision, six male dormitories and one female dormitory were reopened in the afternoon. Academic activities are set to resume on May 4.

On Wednesday, students from a number of other prominent educational institutions across the country, including Jahangirnagar University and Dhaka College, joined the hunger strike movement with their KUET peers, demanding the resignation of Vice Chancellor Mashud for allegedly discriminating against students over the February violence.

On 18 February, a section of KUET general students, backed by Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, locked in clashes with Chhatra Dal activists, and their local armed supporters as Chhatra Dal attempted to revive student politics on campus.

KUET students have for long sought a politics-free campus, and their aspirations were materialised following the ouster of fascist Awami League government on 5 August last year.

After the 18 February clash, the university authority suspended many students and shut down dormitories. The dormitories were expected to reopen on 4 May, but the students demanded early reopening as well as the withdrawal of suspension order.
