IUB launches future-ready Wi-Fi 7.0 network in major digital leap

Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) has launched a new high-speed Wi-Fi infrastructure, transitioning from Wi-Fi 5.0 to the state-of-the-art Wi-Fi 7.0, to support faster, low-latency, secure and more reliable internet access across its campus.

The upgraded system was officially launched at a programme held on Sunday (June 29), at the DMK Lecture Gallery in the presence of several members of the Board of Trustees and senior management. The event also coincided with the 100th meeting of the IUB Board of Trustees.

The new system includes a significantly larger number of state-of-the-art access points and backbone connection, allowing more than 25,000 devices to connect simultaneously – a substantial upgrade from the previous infrastructure, which could support only a few hundred. The upgrade is part of IUB’s broader push to build a future-ready campus – one that is equipped to integrate major technological advancements as they emerge.

“It is designed to support the growing demand from students, faculty, and IoT devices, while enabling zero-trust security, smart learning environments, seamless BYOD [Bring Your Own Device] access, and future scalability,” said Dr. Mahady Hasan, Associate Professor of Computer Science and Engineering and Director of Automation at IUB.

Vice Chancellor Prof. M. Tamim said, “This was a long-standing demand of our students. I am happy to see that we have finally delivered on it. Better connectivity is fundamental to academic excellence in today’s world.”

Chairman of the Board of Trustees Mr. Didar A Husain said, “We understand the expectations of our students and faculty. I would request everyone to have patience and trust in the Board and the management to give students everything they need in due course.”

The BDT 3.6 crore project was implemented over several months by the university’s Central Information and Technology Services (CITS) in collaboration with technology partner Ensure Support Services (ESS) Limited. The enhanced infrastructure is expected to enable more seamless online classes, improved hybrid learning capabilities, and better support for research activities requiring stable high-speed internet. It will also allow classrooms to be equipped with more advanced digital tools and interactive platforms.

BOT member Mr. Towhid Samad also spoke at the event. Trustees Mr. Rashed Chowdhury, Mr. Altamash Kabir, Mr. Ashrafuddin Ahmed and Mrs. Hosne Ara Ali; Pro Vice Chancellor Prof. Daniel W. Lund and Treasurer Khandker Md. Iftekhar Haider were also present, along with faculty members, students and staff.
