Benazir Ahmed’s DU doctorate suspended

The University of Dhaka (DU) has suspended the doctorate degree of former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed following initial findings of irregularities in the admission process.

A fact-finding committee submitted a report to the university’s highest policy-making forum on July 20, which found preliminary evidence that Benazir did not meet the eligibility criteria for admission to the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) programme under the Faculty of Business Studies in 2019.

Based on the report, the university authorities formed a five-member investigation committee for a more detailed probe. Until the investigation is complete, the doctorate degree will remain suspended.

The newly formed committee is headed by Dhaka University’s Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Dr Mamun Ahmed, with Registrar Munshi Shams Uddin Ahmed serving as member secretary. Other members include Law Faculty Dean Dr Mohammad Ikramul Haque, Syndicate member Professor Dr Mohammad Abu Yusuf, and Marketing Department Professor Dr ABM Shahidul Islam. The committee has been asked to submit its findings within 30 working days.

Benazir Ahmed received his DBA degree in 2019.

Benazir, who served as both IGP and Director General of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), has faced various allegations including corruption, embezzlement, land grabbing, and abuse of power. Following the fall of the previous government in July last year, further accusations emerged over alleged extrajudicial killings and repression during his tenure. He is currently reported to be absconding.
