Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan on Saturday night announced a ban on student politics in the university’s residential halls, reaffirming a decision outlined in the July 17 framework.
Speaking in front of his residence, the VC said the move aims to curb coercive political activities and end the practice of “gan rooms” in the halls.
“We do not want any form of coercive politics. The decision made on July 17 will remain in effect,” he said, adding that the university is working towards holding the DUCSU elections and appreciated the positive attitude of students in this regard.
Following his announcement, students dispersed and returned to their halls. Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed later told reporters that the ban had already been in place, with the VC confirming its continuation.
The Provost Standing Committee will meet to formally discuss the matter, while the administration also plans to hold talks with Chhatra Dal and other student organisations.
Earlier, students from several halls began chanting slogans and brought out a procession from Mohsin Hall, which moved past Masterda Surja Sen Hall and the VC Chattar before reaching Rokeya Hall. Female students from Rokeya Hall broke a lock to join the demonstration, which continued at the Raju Memorial Sculpture before heading to the VC’s residence for a sit-in protest.
Alongside general students, several leaders of the Democratic Student Union were seen demanding an end to hall-based political activities.
Pro-VC (Administration) Professor Saima Haque Bidisha, Pro-VC (Education) Professor Mamun Ahmed, Provost Standing Committee President Professor Abdullah Al Mamun, and Shaheed Sergeant Zahurul Haq Hall Provost Professor Faruq Shah were also present during the discussions.
