Islamist student organisation Islami Chhatra Shibir has announced its candidates for the upcoming Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election, with senior leaders Abu Sadiq Kayem and SM Farhad contesting top positions.
Abu Sadiq Kayem, the organisation’s central publications secretary and former president of Chhatra Shibir’s Dhaka University unit, will run for the post of Vice-President (VP).
The group’s current Dhaka University president, SM Farhad, will contest the position of General Secretary (GS), while the unit’s general secretary, Mohiuddin Khan, will stand for Assistant General Secretary (AGS).
The announcement was made on Monday (18 August) at a press briefing in Dhaka University’s Senate Building, where Chhatra Shibir’s central general secretary, Nurul Islam Saddam, introduced the three lead candidates. He was joined by the organisation’s office secretary, Sibgatullah, while the names of other panel members were announced by Farhad.
Shibir’s panel will also include candidates from the Muktijuddho and Democratic Andolon Inqilab Manch. Among them are Fatema Tasnim Juma (Women’s Representative), Iqbal Haider (Science and Technology Secretary), Umme Salma (Common Room, Reading Room and Cafeteria Secretary), and Khan Jasim (International Affairs Secretary), who lost one eye during the July uprising.
Other nominees include Nurul Islam Sabbir (Literature and Cultural Affairs), Arman Hossain (Sports), Asif Abdullah (Student Transport), and Shariful Islam Muaj (Social Service). The panel also included Sajjad Hossain Khan (Research and Publications), Majharul Islam (Career Development), Abdullah Al Minhaj (Health and Environment), and Sakhawat Zakaria (Human Rights and Law).
In addition, 13 executive member positions were announced. These include Sar Mitra Chakma, Imran Hossain, Belal Hossain Apu, Joyen Uddin Sarkar Tanmoy, and Miftahul Hossain Al Maruf, the current sports secretary of Shibir’s Dhaka University unit. Other names on the list are Majharul Islam Mujahid from the International Relations Department, special needs student Raisul Islam, and female representatives Sabikun Nahar Tamanna and Afsana Akter.
The executive panel also includes Shahiur Rahman, Abdullah Al Mahmud, debater Raihan Uddin, and Anas Bin Monir from the Students Against Torture platform.
