Milestone Tragedy: Student Tasnia succumbs to burn injuries

Tasnia, a 15-year-old eighth-grade student at Milestone School and College in Uttara, has died more than a month after suffering severe burn injuries in the fighter jet crash that struck the campus on July 21.

She passed away on Saturday (August 23) around 8 am while undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.

Dr Sultan Mahmud Sikder, acting resident surgeon of the institute, said Tasnia had sustained burns on 35 percent of her body and had been under intensive care. “She was being treated in the ICU, where she died this morning,” he confirmed.

Tasnia’s father, Md Nazmul Hossain, described her as a bright student who had been studying in class eight at Milestone School.

Her death has brought the number of fatalities treated at the burn institute to 20. Fourteen patients have so far recovered and been discharged, while 22 others remain hospitalised.

The accident occurred on July 21, when a fighter jet crashed onto the Milestone School and College campus in Uttara’s Diabari area.

Rescue teams, with the help of locals, carried out operations throughout the day. That night, authorities confirmed 20 deaths, including the pilot, Tauquir Islam.

Several of the injured later succumbed to their wounds during treatment, while others recovered and returned home. In total, 36 people have been confirmed dead in connection with the tragedy.

The following day, July 22, the government declared a one-day state mourning in memory of the victims.
