Independent candidate Mahin Sarkar has withdrawn his candidature for the position of General Secretary (GS) in the upcoming Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) election, extending his support to Bangladesh Ganatantrik Chhatra Sangsad (BGCS) nominee Abu Baker Mojumdar.
The announcement came today (September 5) at a press conference held in front of Madhur Canteen on the Dhaka University campus, where Mojumdar was also present.
Mahin was contesting from the independent panel led by Jamaluddin Muhammad Khalid, convener of Swadhin Bangladesh Chhatra Sangsad and VP candidate from the 'Shomonnito Shikkharthi Sangsad' panel. Khalid, a student of the Arabic Department, previously served as president of Islami Chhatra Andolan’s DU unit before resigning to remain active in campus issues.
Explaining his decision, Mahin said he stepped down in the “spirit of unity” born from the July mass uprising. “If the leadership of the DUCSU polls can be elected from the frontline leadership of the uprising, they will feel a greater sense of responsibility toward the students.
Baker is a vanguard of the mass uprising. If he is elected GS, that will be my victory too,” he said.
Baker praised Mahin’s role during the movement, recalling how he mobilised students and pushed strategies in critical moments.
“From the beginning of July, he insisted we focus attention on the Parliament building. In the hardest days, he carried the movement forward,” Baker added.
Mahin, formerly joint secretary of the National Citizen Party (NCP), was expelled from the party on August 18 for alleged “serious breaches of party discipline.”
Despite this, he remained active in campus politics until his withdrawal from the race.
